Act 3 scene 5 happens just after Romeo and Juliet have spent their first night together as a married couple and after Romeo has been banished for killing Tybalt.

Juliet is urging Romeo to flee, to save his life. Romeo doesn't want to but is eventually persuaded. After he leaves, Juliet's mother tells her that they've arranged a marriage between Juliet and Paris. As they don't know about Juliet's marriage to Romeo, they misunderstand her tears and anger as grief for Tybalt's death. When Juliet says she will not marry Paris, Capulet becomes angry and tells her that if she doesn't go through with the marriage then she can never again see him. The nurse then advises Juliet to seek the advice of Friar Lawrence.

Act 3 scene 5 is important because it is from this point in time that the events occur that lead to the suicides of Romeo and Juliet. The news of the wedding to Paris sends Juliet to Friar Lawrence looking for a way out. When she threatens to kill herself, he comes up with the plan for Juliet to drug herself and feign death, whilst Romeo is contacted and told to come and take Juliet away. Romeo never gets this message and only hears Juliet is dead. He comes back to Verona where he kills himself in the Cauplet tomb. Juliet awakes to find her husband dead and kills herself as well. If it weren't for the arranged marriage to Paris, the subsequent chain of events would not have happened.

It's a scene where Juliet has some major changes. First, she disobeys her father, which was REALLY bad in medieval times. She gets in major trouble for that. Then, she cuts her ties to the nurse, who had been a close and trusted friend. Last, Romeo, her secret husband, has to go away. Juliet begins to feel like she is alone in the world. How do you think that affects her behaviors in the rest of the story?
