In my own words here is what poverty is:
Deciding to either keep bills paid and food on the table or pay for needed medical treatment. Not having enough money after paying bills to get decent groceries for your family. Living in substandard housing because there is not enough money to live better. Loosing sleep worrying will you make enough of a paycheck to make ends meet. Poverty is asking the state or agencies for help for food and being turned down. Poverty is many things to many people. But most of all poverty is having (by no choice of your own) to live with whatever means is possible.

Poverty has a few different definitions.
1) the state of being extremely poor
2) the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount.
3) the renunciation to the right to individual ownership of property as part of a religious vow.

When speaking of poverty, definition number 1 is most popular. (The state of being extremely poor.) Some people feel strongly that every person is born with the same chances of success as others. Others will debate that we are born into social classes and we usually stay within our own social class throughout our lives. Of course there are many people that work hard and take risks and encounter opportunities to better their lives financially.

My feelings on poverty is that although poverty is a shame and heartbreaking, it is a part of our world. It has always existed and I could only imagine that it will continue to exist.

The flip side to those in poverty is that if/when the day comes that this planet finds itself in a war of atomic proportions, those in poverty will be the ones who loose the least and gain the most.

for one thing, poverty as defined in this country is not poverty compared to actual poverty. Just cause you dont have two suv's and a garage to put them in so you park your old pickup in the driveway doesnt compare to poverty in the third world countries when they dont eat for a week. That said, in 99% of poverty cases, the system makes sure that they stay there, it takes an exceptional individual to break out of the cycle. Its not good for anyone, but will probably never go away.

I went through a really hard time about 15 years ago. I got divorced, lost my job and lost my apartment so I moved out in a tiny travel trailer behind my moms house with my 2 kids. I remember this one time where all we had to eat was a can of tuna and some corn tortillas.. I made the kids tuna tacos, they wanted more but there wasn't any more.
That feeling right there, the helplessness, was the most awful thing in my whole life.. my babies were hungry and I couldn't do anything about it.
I really feel for people in that situation and there are so many. We volunteer at a homeless shelter and outside on the streets people have set up tents. What kills me to see is all the kids out there..cold, dirty and hungry.
We were serving lunch one day and my son saw this boy he goes to school with there.. he was surprised because he thought only homeless people went there.
There are all kinds of poor people out there.

There are many kinds of poverty. Not having the money to feed your family is one. Not having empathy for the poor is another. Not questioning that the meaning of life is to take all you can get is another. Poverty means being deprived of human necessities. Not having money is not the worst form of poverty.

I think it is a crime that as the richest country in the world there are people living out of cars, etc. The fact that people can not afford medical care and prescription medications.... For shame!!There is too much money in politics and not enough FOR the people! It seems you have to be on welfare to get any help, what about the people who are working and simply can not survive? Or the folks who, through no fault of their own have no job or are injured or sick?? Third world countries? We don't even take care of our own people. It's terrible!

I haven't experienced poverty but I'm not wealthy.
I hate not being able to buy everything I want when
I want it so I imagine poverty must really suck.

i think it is a disgrace. we spit out water if it is warm while some people are drinking digustingly dirty water. we have clothes they have cloths. i think something should be done! look at the really rich people like soccer players and Bill Gates even. why aren't they donating money so people in third world countries can have a good life? in some places the white people are rich while the black people are desperatly poor. my friend's great auntie lives somewhere like that and she has black servants. 11of them! when she visited her, her great auntie said to my friends mum 'dont worry about you r coat that thing there will take it away.' referring to the black servant as a thing is bad enough but it turns out he was her longest servant (8 years) and she didn't even know his name. it is horrible!

thee is enough for everyone's need on this earth, but not enough for any one's greed. Greed of people is the rootcause of poverty. If greed ceases to exist there wont be any poverty. There are enough resources on this earth .

I don't pity the poor, and I don't hate the rich. Life is what you make of it. And if you choose not to get an education, and not to persue a job, then you choose to be poor. There is no excuse not to be educated when it is provided for free. And I hate to think that my tax dollars are wasted on an education that is not being utilized, resulting in more of my tax dollars to pay for a welfare check.
