Chips themselves are very reliable. Lots of discrete components, because of mechanical reasons (dry joints, Vibration damage etc) reduce reliability.

Also, with a PIC chip there is inbuilt stuff such as watchdog timers, brownout detection etc which can recover from errors such as software faults or dodgy power supplies
