These three words just do not go together. There is no such thing as a Decent, Cheap, Laptop. Plan to spend about $700. That is pretty cheap considering a few years ago the basic laptop was almost $2000. I remember when laptops were $3-5000 for the most basic one.

it's hard to say decent, cheap and laptop together
However dell sell a good selection and the prices are not to bad. What ever you do be sure you can get after sell service and support. You may need to pay a bit more but if you need service or support you don't want to be forced to deal with some guy on China :-)

In my area, Circuit City and Office Depot have run ads for Compaq Presarios including a HP printer, for $299 after rebate. That's the rock-bottomest price I've ever seen for a new notebook. Check the ads in your Sunday paper.

dell currently has a deal going on with laptops starting at 299 without rebate. its only via their website shop tho. good luck

I got mine off Ebay...fairly reasonable...nice Sony Viao, not used or refurbished for $240 with shipping.
Ebay is hit or miss, you just need to be patient and really search
