You want to avoid the Gold Spike and the Western, even the homeless do...There are a couple of real nice hotels downtown Golden Nugget and Main Street Station...Then you have the ones with clean rooms, Vegas Club,Four Queens,Fitzgerald's,California that would do in a pinch...I stay at Main Street Station when I want to stay DT, if you're much of a player at all they take good care of you...I'm a quarter video poker player, and I never pay for a meal, and they send me at least 2 free nights every month, often times it's 3 nights or maybe 2 free nights for me and bring a friend and they get 2 free nights too(etc)..

The Goldspike is the worst place ever!!!! I went there with a group of cheap people! Although I had been to Las Vegas, I had never stayed Downtown, and the ladies I traveled with made the reservations all together. We paid $35.00 per night for 4 days and 3 nights of hell! When we arrived on Fremont Street, we could not find the Gold Spike. We ended up asking a man that was HOMELESS!! He directed us to the Gold Spike and told us it was the luckiest place in town! He failed to mention that the room was dirty, dark, dusty, and the casino smelled of fresh and old urine! It is a local place, but even the locals are kinda scary looking! No lie, there was a blind man playing the Video Poker Machine when we walked in!!! My friends complained of the smell and the dirty bathroom. Each night we were in Vegas, we returned to our rooms before the sun went down because we were fearful for our lives! If you value your life, don't stay there!!!

Living in Vegas for over 20 years now, and reading the other answers to your question,,there is only a few things I have to add...
The Gold spike does have a nickname, and a well deserved one at that..its nickname is the "Bucket of Blood. This and the other answers to your question should tell you to STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Stay anywhere else downtown (other than the golden gate) and you should be fine.
