I read it as an adult, but it is one of my all-time favourite books. The story is surreal and yet incredibly touching.
I've only read it in French - I have the english version, but I fell in love with the original French so I've never been able to read it in English!
The characters, apart from the narrator are surreal. The Little Prince himself is remarkable for being both incredibly innocent and yet incredibly wise at the same time. The scenes are cut perfectly - as the story hops from planet to planet it's like a mini-Aesop's fables... there are so many lessons to learn. I think what you take away from it is very individual - I don't think it is possible to say just one thing about the book.
I think overwhelmingly the book is about truth, about seeing the importance of the little things in life and about leaving aside the cold-hearted rationalism of adulthood and seeing the true beauty of the world through the eyes of a child - The Little Prince.

Warning: it'll make you cry (even if you're grown up). It's just lovely. If there's a "lesson", I suppose it's to let yourself be vulnerable (which is what you do by loving someone/something) even though you can almost expect to have your heart broken, because that depth of feeling is what makes you human.
My only copy is in French, but one passage goes, "Mais, si tu m'apprivoises, nous aurons besoin l'un de l'autre. Tu seras pour moi unique au monde. Je serai pour toi unique au monde...dit le renard." "But if you tame me, we will need one another. To me, you will be unique in all the world. For you, I will be unique in all the world...said the fox."
It's very simple and a great read. Give it a try!

I thought it was genius! I only discovered it in my twenties but thought that it was really insightful. Have recommended it to a lot of my friends too.
