I wouldn't say it was inevitible, but it was extremely likely.
1.) Due to the time it took to pass messages from Britain to the colonies, communication delays forced the colonies to be more independant minded - one could never wait for or expect timely help from Britain.
2.) The colonies required protection from the British Army, which costs money. The British thus needed to tax the colonies, however, they were unwilling to give the colonies proportional representation in Parliament. Even if they had - the communication delay between the colonies and Britain would have made such a representative's job extremely hard.
The war could have been averted had the British not had George III and very some belligerant ministers who refused to compromise and work with the colonists. A very good comparison would be Canada, which did not need to revolt against Britain to become a sovereign nation - it was possible for this outcome to occur for America - in fact, many Founding Fathers did not wish for revolt against Britain at first, until Parliament and the King kept pushing them towards it.
