And exterior influences have nothing to do with it?
When you see somebody that you think has the perfect life (whether because of money, family, love, relationships or success), do you think you would be immediately happy if you had his/her life?
or do you believe that you are only happy if you can be happy with yourself, no matter what your life is like?

I think happiness, or unhappiness for that matter, results from a combination of internal and external factors. By nature, we are not self-contained beings. We need things from the external environment in order to survive and function. And I don't think anyone can be truly happy if their survival and functionality are in constant jeopardy. But above our basic physiological needs, we determine what it is that we what from this life to make us seem whole and decide on the best course of action to get it. In that way, happiness is function of the internal self. It's not a competition, it's a partnership. I think the key is to develop a sense of harmony between the internal and external world.

"The sooner you can match what's in your head to what going on in the real world the better you're going to feel."

Yes. Look as some of these folks who have money pouring out of their ying yangs and all they can do is whine all the time and go to therapy. Happiness can be influenced by outside forces, but only TRUE happiness comes from the soul.

As an intrinsic person, I believe that happiness is what I make it. I can amuse myself and keep myself happy because I don't need anyone to do that for me. Sure, other people can enhance my happiness, but it originates within me.
Extrinsic people, however, need outside influences to basically decide their emotions. They are the people who do not like being alone and enjoy, almost need, the company of others to be happy.

To a large extent but don't underestimate the influence of external factors. If everything falls out of place all around you, you will find a hard time trying to convince your inner-self of the need to be happy.

Yes i do believe its inside yourself. With me I need to be at peace with myself and just don't blame myself every-time I make mistakes. Bad things can happen, its not 'How bad it is' its how you deal with it. You could be really negative and regretful or you could show yourself how you've learnt from the mistake and It was meant to happen for what ever reason. I think people need to learn how to cope with things and issues, there can be some positivity in a bad situation. Hope that helps :)

Happiness comes from within. I honestly believe that if I am not happy with myself no one can make me happy. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.
