Empathy can't be taught. It's part of being human. But it can be shut down. When empathy is shut down, others are seen as objects rather than experienced as fellow subjects. Because of sexual repression, boys hormones lead them to fantasies in which the females are objects of desire.

Women, on the other hand, have their heads filled with fairy tales. Someday my prince will come, etc. When attracted to a man, they wonder if he could be HIM. Comparing him to their fantasy "soul mate" shuts down empathy in the same way that her being a sex object has shut down the male.

Empathy is really cool and very real. It's the natural basis for human relationship. But we live in a society where getting and taking are considered more real.

True - Men empathize b'cos they may want something in return.
True - Women don't empathize b'cos they know what they may get in return.

I think most women automatically empathize with others.
And most men have to be taught.
So, technically, both are true.

Your personality is not hardwired as per biology, it is determined by how you are raised (i.e., socialization). It's nurture, not nature.

I've met some pretty cold women including my wife's former boss.
