When my PC turns on without problem, it works OK for some minutes and then it freezes and locks-up. Nothing moves, no mouse or keyboard.

After that the only way to turn it off is pressing the on button for 5 sec. After that it won't turn on immediately. I have to either wait a few minutes or hours before the laptop will want to turn on again and if it does it works OK for again the 5-10 minutes or so.

Is that a problem with CPU/processor, since I reckon, it must've been getting hot & hence the problem occurs & the reason laptop don't start immediately is cos the CPU is still hot & need to cool down. Could there be another problem, instead.

I'm using Windows XP SP2 & haven't downloaded anything recently over the Internet that could've possible be behind this problem.

Can anyone around help ???

It works OK in the Safe Mode, possibly meaning that CPU heating-up isn't quite a problem then.

It is overheating. If you are comfortable with opening it up, unscrew the bottom and make sure the fans are all spinning properly or aren't clogged up. If you are under warranty, take it in, or if not and you aren't comfortable take it into a store to be fixed. I would get it fixed asap though. Overheating a computer like that can damage it permanately.

EDIT : Added after comments. It working in safe mode doesn't mean it isn't overheating. The system isn't running nearly as intensively, meaning it would take much longer to overheat. If it won't turn on after locking up for awhile, it is DEFINITELY hardware problem. Like I stated before, probably overheating. Probably just a clogged or defective fan. I would check into yourself before you pay 100$ to have someone look at it.

Quite a good question as this morning i have had the same problem. Fixed it by uninstalling the last 2 apps i had installed and doing a boot up virus scan. Also i did find that i had installed zone alarm and i think that what caused the problem. Virus scan should be the first option tho as is more probable cos your laptop starts fine then slows down. Check the system32 folder for anything called for example a.exe b.exe etc as this is a virus that will slow ur computer down. also consider installing avast antivirus (www.avast.com) its free and it automatically updates daily.

Good Luck

The word LOCK UPS ! IF your CPU was over heating it wouldnt lock at all in fact it would shut down completly. Lock ups from no where or like in your situation would be power supply or hard drive .. PLEASE NOTE that not all LOCK UPS are the same I am talking with experiance in the work field doing computer repairs for a while now. Trouble shoot the following
RAM
PSU
HDD
or scan for a virus! So trouble shoot in those areas first. Check the PSU first because that is what my first trouble shoot would be...

Before coming up with strange and outlandish theories on anything, I always run through the following steps:

1) Full Windows update
2) Update my virus software and run a full scan
3) Same for AdAware and so on
4) Start Windows in safe mode and see if it still happens

If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

Two things, check the fan and add more Ram Memory, Ram will boost its performance.
