kids can't separate the two words together: at their young age they are either aren't mature or as emotionally developed enough to distinguish these terms and tell the difference between respect and fear. how can they perceive respect and fear as being in the same context as each other when really as you just said by demanding respect, what they meant by that is we as grown ups should feel we have to bow down to their demands. if they want respect, like everyone else in society- be it young and old- they'd have to earn it and to not expect it to turn up right under their noses just so they can grab it by the scruff of the neck. it just doesn't work like that. respect is not something that is given to us out of nowhere: it is a form of etiquette, of which people- be it aged 5, 10, 31 or whatever- must be prepared to work for and by showing courtesy, good manners and tolerance.

Respect has to be earned, you don't earn it by putting the fear of god up people by threatning them with knife or a BB gun because you pulled them up for vandalising a bus shelter. I have absolutely no respect for teenagers, I see them all as a*seholes unless they can demonstrate to me they are different. To put it one way, if I ran over a dog with my car, I would be hugely upset, but if I ran over a teenager playing chicken on the road, it wouldn't bother me, I'd be more bothered about the car! That attitude, I'm afraid, is their own fault, they couldn't care less about me, so why should I give a f*ck about them? If they want respect, then it's them that want to take a reality check about their attitude and stop behaving like overgrown petulant morons! I came through my teenage years without upsetting people or destroying things or any of the yobbery that is seen as 'cool' nowadays, I didn't think I was 'it', and I got respect from people without looking for it, I didn't demand it, I earned it by behaving like a reasonable human being.

They grow up to quickly. As for RESPECT and Discipline the kids have none. As for schools what need I say, disgraceful. Look the
subjects at school, are too broad i.e. GCSE science. All in one, not a specific subject e.g. Physics, Chemistry, or Biology. The youngsters today are illiterate + foul mouthed.

Yes but these youngsters are sadly not bright or educated enough to differentiate between respect and fear.

TV is the culprit in this case. It has confused the true meaning of each and led our youth to believe the fear is respect. It is a position of ignorance.

Respect is gained from credibility and integrity. Fear comes when you felt threaten by a dirty background of that person.
Eg. pastor ronald l.k. chia from Singapore don't gain my respect for breaking one of the 10 commandments. He cheated me of my time and skills in web design. He promised to pay me SGD168 for my service but end up not paying.
I fear to expose him earlier because of his background as a pastor.
Hope you got me now.

i think its more recognition rather than respect or fear. unfortunatly there are some people that will do bad things to get recognition from people that believe doing bad things gets you respect

What they demand is what they perceive as their rights.........but what that actually means is no one can say boo to them butthey can be abusive and rude to whoever and when ever. We have lost the place somewhere.
