Don't let some of the other posts scare you away from SF. Yes, it is expensive however, many of the things to do and see are free or inexpensive. First locate a hotel away from the tourist area yet with easy access to the tourist area via public transportation. I can give you some specific ideas on this. Second do not have your meals in the tourist areas 3-4 blocks away can make a big difference. Golden Gate Park, Bridge, Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf, ChinaTown are all free to visit and loaded with free entertainment. For an inexpensive day trip take the ferry to Salsalito. Thanks for readying my two cents worth.

San Fran is very expensive just like the rest of CA. You shouldn't travel without at least 3 to 5 thousand dollars available. It depends on how long you plan to visit. It's a beautiful place with wonderful parks and sites. Make sure you see the Golden Gate Bridge and it's park. You can ride the trolley's everywhere. The only problem I had was the hills and having to park elevated.

On a budget? I hope you have friends or relatives to crash with. Crappy motels are still expensive. Don't rent a car, there's plenty of public transportation. And just walking around the city is beautiful. (Stay away from the Tenderloin district) Stay away from big restaurants and find the little holes in the wall. For ethnic cuisines, that can't be beat.

Biggest expense will be lodging. You can lower this cost by using Priceline and (hint) staying by the airport (SFO). While not in the city, it's directly via BART.
I've been staying at a VERY nice hotel for $45-50/night. You pay more than that for a crappy motel in the city.

if you on a budget then don't travel. staying in any metropolitan city will be expensive.....unless you're daring and want to stay in the crappy hotels for $150 bucks a night.
