Yes they always take off backwards. But here's an interesting thing to do with them: The next time you encounter a fly, wait til it lands (they prefer light colored surfaces) and position yourself in front of it about arms length. Then, with your arms outstretched at shoulder height and to your right and left, stick out your index fingers like you're going to touch something. Now gradually bring the tips of your pointing fingers in towards the fly as if you are going to touch each of its eyes on the sides of its head. They fly will be paralyzed until you are incredibly close to touching it! His tiny brain goes into overload and can't handle two things approaching at the same time! You won't believe me until you do it yourself, but you WILL be amazed!

because there's a big pile of fly vomitus right in front of them. Would you walk through your own puke? me neither!
PS - regarding swatting them - I hear as well as trying to swat them from behind, do it v-e-r-y slowly, because they are good at detecting movement, they don't 'see' things that move so slowly. Also, swat using two rolled up newspapers - one in each hand. Make like you going to swat from one side, as they take off away from one, swat 'em with the other. Need to do it quick, in a kind of ba-BLAM! way. Most satisfying...
PPS don't condone killing living things, but if they're menacing me, gotta fight back. Kinder than fly spray anyway...

no I have seen them take off in just about every direction but it looks like to me they choose to take off backwards because they know whats already coming in front of them

I'm not sure. When trying to swat one, I always try to creep up on it from behind. This would make it a dead cert to kill, but I usually miss, so......
