The 101 stands for the class #. For example instead of Earth Science the class may be named Science 106 or instead of begining Algebra it would be Algebra 101. 101 is usually the first class in a series.

100 level classes are Freshman classes.
200 level classes are Sophmore classes... etc...
The 101 is the 1st class in the Freshman series. 103 is the third class in the Freshman series. And so on.
