It means basic. I 101 course designated the first required course needed in order to get a degree in an area.

The 101 stands for the class #. For example instead of Earth Science the class may be named Science 106 or instead of begining Algebra it would be Algebra 101. 101 is usually the first class in a series.

100 level classes are Freshman classes.
200 level classes are Sophmore classes... etc...
The 101 is the 1st class in the Freshman series. 103 is the third class in the Freshman series. And so on.

It is the beginning course. You are going to learn the basics of that particular course. It is a general overview of the subject. Think of it like introduction to science.

It means the class ID. If you are in college, or something. Some have history 105 or whatever.
