as connector and as a pause between sentences?
so, it just drives me nuts!

"So" doesn't bother me. "Alot" does.

Very right. It serves no 'sense' purpose, just a word used to get the attention of the other person, and at the most , also to get a partial concurrence in some contexts.
There is another more irritating word, that fits in almost any where ! "Rather"... ! At school, we had a teacher who used it about 140 times in a 40 minute class ! This count was out of our curiosity (and we missed the lessons, just stupidly counting it !); he rather regularly rather used it(it means 'rather') rather !

So, I see what you're saying, and yes, it is SO annoying. But I am also guilty of using "so" so much. So I will have to just apologize for being so uncreative with my connectors and pauses. So there.

i say dude quite a bit sometimes... i can't really help it, it's just habit =P... "so" isn't really used that often around here where i live (PA)... i mostly hear "like"
i know where you're coming from... i hate when people are telling me stories or a joke and 80% of it is "like" or "um" ... annoying!
