Try reading a lot of other books

If you're serious about getting published then the "Writers and Artists Handbook" lists lots of literary magazines and publishers

"The Writers Block" is a little book that is great for kick starting ideas

Also make sure that you have a decent dictionary and thesaurus as it's always important to use the right words and not use the same word too many times. A good English Language Usage Book is always good as well because we all get confused about different words (eg when to use 'practice' vs 'practise')

I think that every author that has ever written a novel has also written a book on how to write, but I hear that Stephen King's "On Writing" is quite easy to follow and quite good - what a person to emulate.

Good Luck and remember that you should write every day, even if it is not great literature because it is only through practise that we succeed :)

read the classics. Some good authors are Daphne DuMaurier, Robert Louis Stephenson, John Steinbeck, L.M. Montegomery, and Longfellow.

Some modern authors I'd recommend are Penelope Stokes,Peter Mayle, and Richard Paul Evans.
