eBay is losing popularity amoung SELLERS, but remains the same amoung buyers. The reason is because eBay fees are rediculous! If you see high shipping costs, it is because the sellers are getting slammed with really high eBay fees. If the item does not sell, then you don't get your money back.
If eBay was a country, it would be the fourth largest country in the World. (Determined by the number of active ebay users worldwide.)
A really good site, that just got bought out by Ubid, is Bidville: http://www.bidville.com. There are no insertion fees. If you own a store, there are no fees whatsoever! (execpt for the monthly store maintaince fee.)

No idea how many customers they have. But as for losing popularity, they say no. I however think they may be... why else would they constantly offer 10cent listing days, or list your items for free days... they're trying to get more people to sell stuff on their site, and the only reason they would do that is because they're losing popularity.
Just my opinion though.

I am not sure about the amount of eBay users there are, but I do know that Overstock has an auction type set up too.

If anything, it's gaining popularity, but nobody knows the exact amount because so many people are joining even right this second.
