If you have the cash, buy new.
Obsolete tech is just that, obsolete.

Refurbs will save you money, however, if you are looking at a name brand like HP you are better off going with a new unit....especialy if you have little or no tech savy with computers.
A "refurb" is a unit that was purchased by someone and found to have a defect serious enough that it needed to be sent back to the manufacturer. Such units are often problematic This is why they rarely come with a warranty longer than 30 or 90 days.
If the reseller is offering a full year long warranty then go for it. If not ... there is a reason. If they believed the unit would remain problem free they would not limit the warranty to 90 days or less.
Also, you get great online & phone support with a new unit. If you plan to keep it for a couple of years the difference in cost probably comes out to two or three dollars a week ( a coffee at Starbucks). Give yourself peace of mind and don't do something you may regret.
Go for the new unit ... I certainly would.

50/50 shot... I have 2 friends that bought refurb'd laptops last week. 1 is absolutely great, the other has already had problems. You're taking a chance, but as long as it has warranty for at least a few months then you should be fine. Most problems will become obvious within a week or so.

build your own, it's not hard, it's fun, and it CAN be done cheap.
I built mine for about 450 bucks and half that is my graff's.
My MoBo and processor were about 110 bucks, 20 bucks for a creative sound 5.1 card,80 bucks for pc2700 1g of RAM, and a 400w PSU for 30 bucks...and of course, a bmg geforce 6800 oc 256mb for 220 bucks....all that a year ago, and i still can keep up with 90% of the marketed games.
