Just did this last night.
There is a four step process, and Home Depot sells the kit, and I'm sure Lowes does also...You can check online.
The Kit has:
1. Counter cleaner....use inbetween polishing.
2. Counter disinfectant....when you have spills especiall raw meat.
3. Spray polish...for every week use....easy.
4. Liquid polish - milky white....put on, dry then wipe the film....shines so well.....awesome!
It really doesn't take that long ...and I've had my granite countertop and backsplash about a year and think it was the best addition to my new maple cabinets.

If you have a true granite counter top, all you need is Windex for most cleaning. If you get something that is a bit thick, then warm soap and water followed by Windex to make it shiny again.
True granite is very dense and not porous. We have had a granite counter top for 10 years. It has never been sealed and we use Windex to clean it. It is a shiny now as it was when we had it installed.
