Hygiene is a major reason for the use of undergarments. It is usually more acceptable to have a soiled pair of undergarments than a pair of soiled trousers when one has an accident.
Undergarments can also have religious significance, as in the special temple garment worn by followers of the LDS Church (Mormons). Some Jews use clothing that should neither touch the skin, nor be used as outer clothing: tallit katan or tallet ketannah or tzitzit. Every Jewish boy and man is supposed to wear Tzitzis (tassles) on undergarments, every day and always when attending synagogue [1]. Some Hindus wear a Sacred Thread underneath their clothing that is supported on the left shoulder and wrapped around the body, falling underneath the right arm.

Underwear allows you to wear your outer layers of clothing longer between washes. Humans have a lot of sweat glands in the groin area and underwear acts as a layer of protection between your clothes and your sweat.Plus underpants tend to be made of softer materials, while not all outer garments are. A nice pair of soft cotton under pants feel much nicer against your sensitive parts than hard denim or scratchy wool.

Most pants are made of sturdy material that is unkind to sensitive skin.
If your zipper is afraid of heights your thatch or worse might peek.
Underwear makes it a little more difficult to get anything with pain receptors caught in your zipper.
A lot of hot weather garments for the lower body are loose to the point of nearly falling down. Unless you're really confident about how you stack up, the possibility of sudden exposure bears considering. Underwear is a little bit of insurance there.
Given that the last three drops wind up in the underwear they only have one place to go when the undies are taken out of the equation.

People who sweat a lot ruin their shirts when they don't wear an undershirt under them. The sweat smell is very hard to get out sometimes, even when washed repeatedly in hot water. Also, undershirts can help prevent that wet pit circle guys can get -- the extra cotton layer soaks it up.

To wear or not to wear, underwear? You just about stated all the good reasons why one shouldn't wear them. We all experienced the classical conditioning since early childhood to wear them, and to always make sure they are clean, in case of an accident. So I guess it's not just a cultural habit, but a habit that might make one feel secure, clean and is connecting to early childhood.

An honest answer from me. I hate not wearing a bra or panties. For me, they serve two functions. Number one, I don't particularly like how my breasts look without a bra. The bra gives them more fullness. Secondly, panties prevent the seams of my pants from going into places where, well, they shouldn't be.

You said yourself, they are sweaty. Do you think you won't sweat without undies?
Underwear is a buffer that absorbs all that gross butt-sweat. Otherwise it will dribble down your pants when you sit down and everyone will see the moist outline of your crack. Yes, that's gross.
But if you get sweaty without underwear you will lose friends.
