Copyrighting is free; it is automatically applied as soon as your thought goes to paper/disc/whatever.

A registered trademark costs £200 a pop.

Copyright is free. If you've written a song or invented something, all you have to do is put the c with the circle around it at the bottom, followed by a name.
It is a good idea to 'post' any details to yourself proving ownership. Do not open the envelope, but in case of someone stealing your idea, you will be able to use the post as proof it is your idea and it will be datemarked.
