It is not a part of the contiguous US states (as is Hawaii).

It is the state that is furtherest north.

It is the largest state (in area) of any state in the US.
There are four time zones in Alaska (including the Aleutian Islands).. including a time zone on each side of the International Date Line.. making it the only state to be the first to start a new year as well as the last to see it in.

It has the largest oil production in the US.

It has the largest area of Federally owned lands of any of the US.

I live in Juneau. Out my front door I commonly see state legislators and can make my opinions known to them in person. Out my back door I can view Mountain Goats and Black Bears on the mountain behind my house. Four hours away in my sailboat traveling at 6 knots I am in the wilderness. There is all the shopping you could want within 10 miles. The air quality is good, we do not have gangs and the level of personal freedom is the highest in the nation. We do not pay state taxes and receive a dividend each year from the state. Some of the most dramatic scenery in the world.

10:00 a.m. Sunday 10/29/06 no legislators in view out my front door but there is a mountain goat in view out my back door

I was once considered a wasteland and it is geographically more a part of Canada. The 24 hours of daylight in the summer and 24 hours of night in the winter.

Biggest state. Only one above arctic circle. Only one where you have to travel across another country to get there by land. Only state whose capitol can't be reached by road. More airplanes per capita than other states. More hours of sunshine in summer and more hours of darkness in winter than other states.

Uhm, well wasn't it like, literally or almost literally, the last state to become a state? plus it's connected to canada so maybe people find it weird that we have 2 states NOT connected to the united states?

It's the only state that has daylight and/or darkness for more than a "day" at a time.
