I can remember watching a film late one night, quite a few years ago on terrestrial UK tv (BBC1 I think). It was set in the future where most women were infertile. Any that were found to be able to have children were basically held prisoner by the state then sent to rich and powerful families to provide children for them. In the end the main character falls pregnant by the gardener/security guard (not sure what he was exactly) and manages to escape and run off and raise the child herself.
Does anyone know what the film is?

Sounds like "The Handmaid's Tale," a US/German production from 1990. It was written by Harold Pinter from and original novel by the Canadian novelist, Margaret Atwood. It was directed by Volker Schlondorff and starred Natasha Richardson, Robert Duvall, Faye Dunaway and Aidan Quinn.
