Buy your own copy and download the drivers from Dells website. And I can tell you now, Dell has recently made clear it will be CHARGING for the upgrade (yes they reneged on the original agreement).

The other problem with taking the upgrade option is that EVERY time you have to reformat and re-install, you will have to first install XP and then upgrade it to Vista - a pain in the backside if you ask me

im not convinced by vista at the present time. At the moment where i work (i work in IT) we are trialing the final version of vista and it is becoming apparent that it will be very memory hungry and processor hungry. I run windows XP at home and at work and not had too many problems so far and also take into consideration that support for windows xp will still continue once vista is out. Windows xp has another 3-4 year in it and by that time the technology and add ons that are required to make vista run quicker will be cheaper and installed on most pc's. Failing all this maybe take a look at Linux. Google it and look for Linux live cd. What the live cd is a operating system or flavour as they call it of linux that you can try out and have a play around with. once you are finished just remove the cd from ur computer and just restart and your windows xp will be back.

Good Luck

Regards

Rob

Free upgrade to Vista? Microsoft may say that, but I don't think they mention which version of Vista you'll be getting, might be just the Vista Home Premium, but you'll probably want the Ultimate version which has all the bells and whistles.

Microsoft will offer coupons to holiday buyers buying a machine that's using XP but is Vista ready. These coupons will offer either free or discounted purchase of Windows Vista.

It will be good to have the option of upgrade for free.
But I would wait until Vista comes out and read the news to how they are preforming and if things look good sure why not.
