That subject is so broad there is no simple answer. There are several books about it. I would recommend a trip to your local library.
Start with a basic art history text. "Art: A Brief History" is a good one. This will give you a basic outline and there are plenty of pretty pictures for you to look at.
From there you might want to check out books such as "A History of Medieval Life" etc
