Back a long time ago the English government offered a huge sun of money for anyone who could come up with a precise way to determine the position of a ship at sea. They could use the stars to tell how far north or south they were, but had no way of determining the east/west position. Some guy whose name eludes me came up with a solution that required a precise clock and a sexton. They set the clock to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and used the sexton to determine noon local time. Noon was the point that the sun stopped climbing and started descending. Knowing that the sun took 24 hours to go around the earth by dividing the map of the earth into 24 latitudes, and each of the latitudes into hours, minutes, and seconds they were able to determine the precise position of the ship from east to west at noon every day. The other countries that started using this method of navigation adopted the British’s designation for longitude 0 to be the meridian that ran through Greenwich.

Later in 1880 the Brits legally set England into one time zones in order to eliminate local time so when the railroads said that they would be getting at the station at noon, everyone would know that was not when the local bell tower rang out noon, rather when Greenwich saw the sun at noon. The American railroads also adopted this method, and the Government divided America into time zones to ease connection of freight and passengers with the trains.

Now GMT is being replaced by UTC or Coordinate Universal Time but this is an atomic time scale which only approximates GMT use as a reference time independent of your local position. It is also called UT or Universal Time. When the Greenwich Observatory started brocasting hourly time signals in 1924 noon was zero hours, then zero hours was moved to midnight in 1925. The universal prim meridian is no longer the Greenwich meridian but is clost to it at 5.31” E (read that five minutes 31 seconds) latitude. Although GMT is no longer use officaly it is still popularly called GMT.

Noon Greenwich Mean Time is not necessarily the moment when the Sun crosses the Greenwich meridian (and reaches its highest point in the sky in Greenwich) because of Earth's uneven speed in its elliptic orbit and its axial tilt.
