natural or true diamonds form more stable carbon-carbon bonds that tends to make it hard to break while artificial diamonds contains such impurities that prohibits those carbon-cabon bonds to form a relatively stable interaction. Moreover, natural diamonds is the hardest mineral according to Moh's Scale of hardness. Well, probably the artificial diamond is not so hard like the natural diamond.

A layman just as yourself can't. Some jewelers have been fooled, but a good jeweler can tell the difference. While both diamonds are made of the same substance (Carbon), natural diamonds have natural impurities in them that give it color. All natural diamonds have color to them, and minor cracks or veins. Man made diamonds are flawless, that's the give away. Blood diamonds is a term for African diamonds mined by very cheap labor under very harsh conditions. Canadian diamonds are what you might want in natural diamonds instead of African. But there is a catch. Most diamonds are owned by De-Beers. So you would have to search real good and hard to find a Canadian diamond. To a young lady it matters natural verses man made when it comes to diamonds. Granted, most people don't really know the difference other then the terminology, but that is the price one must pay. Speaking of prices. Since most diamonds are controlled by De-Beers, there highly inflated prices are also controlled by them. In the end, the consumer pays a vast amount of money over a stone that really isn't that valuable.

If they are true artificial diamonds and not other materials made to simulate diamond there is almost no difference other than certain growth structures which can be seen in the crystal. Artificial diamonds are often produced in a range of colours which are clearly not natural and these are very easy to detect

At the atomic level, none. However, gem quality fake diamonds tend to be too perfect, and give their origin away by their crystalline structure. You need special training to detect the difference.
Most industrial grade diamonds are grown in the lab.

The real ones are made in the Earth when huge pressures force the carbon atoms together to make the diamond.
The artificial ones are made by starting with graphite (sheets of carbon) then using heat and pressure to force the atoms closer together. Chemicaly they are the same. 3D carbon matrix

I assume you are talking about manmade diamonds. Natural are bigger than manmade because they had thousands of years to form under pressures that we cannot duplicate. manmade diamonds are very small but are fine for grinding wheels and such.
