If you have a big enough off cut of the same carpet, cut off a suitable sized square, lay over burnt section and cut out a matching section witha stanley knife. Check the fit and make sure the pile is running the same way, by rubbing your palm across, both pieces. Half overlap a length of carpet tape below each side of the hole, then carefully fit the cut out section into place. If the carpet is very worn the new bit will be obvious untill it beds in a bit.

The proper way to fix that problem is look where the carpet seems are. Remove your carpet to the seems only. Replace with same carpet. You can do it your self and save money,,,it's not that hard especially just a small portion that needs to be removed.
Now if your burn is in the middle of a living room carpet, your talking major replacement here.
The other quick fix remedy is cut out a perfect square of just the burnt piece and replace it with the same size square from the new carpet and glue it back in place and if you do this right, you should not be able to tell other than the new carpet and over a period of time it will tone down to the same color as what you got now.

I've recently repaired a hole in a carpet by using wool of the same colour. You need a carpet needle, obviously, and all you need to do is "sew" a piece of wool through the carpet, tie a couple of tight knots, then cut it to leave short strands that look like carpet fibres. This will only work on a carpet with a pile. Any other type of carpet I don't know about. Good luck.

Having worked with carpet for about ten years I'll tell you that your best bet is to call a installer but if you have a scrap of the same carpet and can cut strait cut the burned piece out cut the other piece to fit the hole cut a piece of fabric (tough stuff) about three inches longer than the hole, press fabric under hole, use a hot melt glue gun to fasten fabric to your carpet, place patch in hole and use glue gun to fasten it (CAUTION KEEP NAP RUNNING THE SAME WAY OR IT WILL LOOK REALLY BAD)
