On lap 7, at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, at 2:17 pm local time, Senna was being chased by Schumacher, but while entering the Tamburello, apparently his steering column snapped, the Brazilian racing legend lost control of his Williams-Renault FW16 and, although slowing down the car after realizing he had lost control, he hit the wall at 230kph. This impact caused severe brain damage, but the real killer was the fact that the right-front wheel became loose at the time of the impact, with part of the suspension attached to it, piercing the helmet's visor and Senna's skull, causing fatal damage to his brain.

The steering column seems to have snapped because of metal fatigue, perhaps because the fact that Senna had asked it to be shortened had also weakened it. But the only truth is that, on May 1st, 1994, Formula 1 lost a great driver and a great personality.

R.I.P. Ayrton, F1 fans around the world still remember and honour you.

He was on cold tires and went off. I've heard that he held his breath, but that's speculation. The steering shaft breaking was the argument from the Italian authorities when they were trying to pin the reason for Sennas death on Frank Williams. Some Italian legal thing says that if somebody dies then somebody must be held accountable, even though it was obviously nobody's fault. All I've ever heard is that his head was pierced by a suspension member that was attached to the wheel. Whether it was that or just the wheel does not matter. He was the best. I cried and cried when that happened, I couldn't believe it and I am very sad thinking about it, now. I believe that racecar drivers are never pronounced dead at the track, or never used to be. I don't know the reason.

When Did Senna Die

To understand how Ayrton Senna died, one must first be able to answer when exactly did he die? He was declared dead at 18:40 on Sunday, May 1st 1994, however, there is evidence that he was already dead when they pulled him out of the car.

The first hint is that after his car came to a halt, you can see his head slightly moving to the left and then falling back on the right slightly tilted. Then, once they took him out of the car, there is a scene when you see one of the doctors raising his left arm and then lets it fall back to the floor, when Senna's arm drops back down, there is no resistance and no muscle movement.

Ayrton Senna died because of a piece the steering column that snapped and went through the helmet, right above the eye and into the brain killing him a few seconds after the impact.

Ayrton Senna Death

Actually Renaultfan they could not prove that the Steering Column snapping was cause or effect.

The accepted reason for the accident is that the car bottomed out on the circuit which threw him into the wall, the collision caused the front wheel to hit him in the head and that gave Senna head injuries that he could not recover from.

It is widely believed that the suspension pierced his Helmet, but again, I don't think that's been proven.

A Williams cars had an accident at (Monza?) during the next lap, it is suspected that AS's car came in contact with debris that hasd not been cleared off the track. He was going at high speed and crashed himself. That's all I know. I think it happened at Monza.

such a bad weekend for the sport.....they found a blood soaked austrian flag inside senna's car, which he planned on using as a tribute to ratzenberger once the race had finished.....i'm pretty sure barichello was out for the whole season too because of his crash

It is widely believed in F1 that when he went round the corner at San Marino his steering wheel came off the steering column in his hands and he crashed straight into the barrier killing him on impact. Shame really as until Alonso came along there wasn't really anyone who caused Schumi any long term problems.
