Because the American don't care about their environment, or anyone elses environment for that matter (their refusal to sign the Kyoto agreement and cut greenhouse gas emissions is a perfect example of this) and are destroying it's habitat.

The reason for this .... GREED

They see short term profit in the Florida Everglades from increasing accommodation for tourists.

But can't see the long term losses they will make once the Everglades have gone.

And once they are drained what will they target next to provide the water needed for these, now redundant, tourist hotels.

The usual reason is the loss of habitat, or living space. Man is moving into the Everglades in Florida, and by so doing shrinking the space that the Panthers need to live. Over the years, many projects outside of the "glades" have drained the water from them, and the scene is slowly changing. You will start seeing more stories about the Panthers, Gators, and snakes, being found in areas which they were not previously in. Many of these will be attacks on people and animals, as these predators look for a food source.
