There has been so much in the news about children and obesity. I believe that today, children have too many "junk" foods and as a result, many are overweight.
The children on my street are mostly all overweight and I think that they all have heavy diets of pop, candies, chips, etc.
I am planning to buy some good quality apples, put them in individual clear bags with a lollipop and some stickers. In case parents are concerned about the apples, I plan to put my name, address and phone number on a card in the package so that parents will know where this treat came from. What do you think of the idea?

Interesting that many of you refer to that urban myth of razor blades in apples. Did you know that there is no recorded evidence ot that ever actually occurring?
I would think that including a name and address in the bag would reassure parents on the street that the apple came from someone reliable in the community.

Many of your indicate that you would not accept an apple unless it is sealed in plastic, yet, I rarely see apples sold that way. Do you suppose we have become so paranoid and risk averse as a society to the point of being ridiculous? Along with promoting obesity, are we only adding to pollution with all of that extra wrapping? I am willing to put provide my name and address as a safety measure when providing what I believe to be a healthy treat. Do you really think that I would be tampering with apples to give to children and then providing them my name, address and phone number?

I probably should add that I live on a street out in the country. Everyone on the street knows me, where I live and my phone number.

Day after Hallowe'en. I did it and guess what? Not only was it well received by the kids, I even had parents phone to thank me. Maybe all of you in the future will consider healthy snacks; that is, food in its purest forms.

Apples - bad idea. It needs to be sealed, or it will be thrown out. Do NOT give our your name. It wouldn't help, anyway, because how would the parents know you didn't write a fake name and address? Instead, what about a fruit snack? It's still mostly sugar, of course, but at least it has some vitamin C, and the kids will eat it. Try fruit roll ups or fruit snacks in cartoon shapes.
As far as the razor blades (and pins) in Halloween treats being an urban myth - you're wrong. There have been many documented cases. Check out Snopes if you don't believe me.
Look, to kids Halloween is about trick or treating, not trick or "I'm going to shove this healthy food down your throat whether your like it or not." An apple is not a treat. If you have a problem with this, turn off your porch light and leave them to their fun. Their eating habits, particularly on Halloween, are not your business.

Unfortunately, the so-called "urban myth" has an energy all its own which means that most parents will automatically toss any apples in their children's bags, although putting contact information is probably not a bad idea. However, your information may find itself in someone's hands who you would rather it didn't so you may want to consider that possibility as well.
As for your rationale, while you may be quite right regarding the epidemic of obesity and of the problems with kids eating far too much sugar, salt et cetera, your proposed plan of action may just as likely be seen as judgemental.
Unfortunately, your strategy is futile. Kids won't eat the apples, and you know that. They will just throw them away.
There is no hard and fast rule that says you have to hand out food. That practice is a vestige of the old pagan practice of leaving food for the wandering spirits who are said to be in contact with those of this world on that night. You can, instead, hand out coupons for a movie rental or a few small prizes like scented erasers. I knew someone who lived next door to a dentist who always handed out dental floss and free toothbrushes.

Sounds like a good plan, we need to all care for each other. It concerns me that you are going to pass out your name and phone number. In this day and time, but I understand, that if you don't, the apples will probably be put in the trash. Parents are afraid nowadays about people putting drugs, poison etc. in their children's treats. Such a sad time for children. I was a child in the late 50's, we could go trick or treating for hours, without our parents going along, and they had no need to worry. How times have changed.

No, it'll still freak out parents due to wackos putting objects in apples in the past. Also, you never know if some parent is a wacko and would try and set you up for a lawsuit claiming the apple was tainted.
You could give sugar free candy or gift certificates.

Its a great that you want to do your part to curb child obesity, but you giving apples will not solve the problem. Most will probably get thrown out. Do everybody a favor and keep your porch light OFF. Don't participate! Don't make a political health stance during a childs candy eating fun day.

I thing it's a good idea with bad timing. There will be a lot of apples in the trash bin, your intentions are good, but the world is full of nut cases, I would not allow my child to eat that apple. You Just never know for sure!!
Sorry, but that's my feelings on items not in factory sealed packages.

Any treat needs to be sealed or parents aren't going to let their kids eat it, you're wasting good apples. Nice idea though. Some people are opting for other treats, stickers, crayons, rocks, personally I like rocks but don't think kids will go for them. Give each of them a nice shiny penny, we used to love these as kids, of course that was almost half a century ago, you may have to go with a loony or toony (I'm Canadian) bills just don't seem like as much fun.

I think it's a good isea, but kids probably won't eat them. They would take a bite out of them if they were dipped in caramel! It's impossible to lick the caramel off after its dry, so it'll force them to eat the apple. The kids are gonna eat candy that night anyway, so they won't consider a plain apple.

In general, that would be a good idea, but because of the day and age we live in, most parents, due to safety reasons only, do not allow their kids any fresh fruit, only wrapped candy, or nuts.
