The paddlings were unpleasant at the time especially in 9th grade and I really hated the principal. But thinking back I have to admit that they were fair and helpful.

I started infant school in 1950, junior school from 1953 to 1958 and Grammar School from 1958 to 1964. All this in England

In those days physical punishment was seen as normal and natural to teach a child discipline or punish them for wrongdoings.

From memory I didn't get struck very much in infant classes although in junior school it was not unusual to be given a good slapping on the backside by the headmaster who would straddle you across his knee and give seven smacks (a good rhythm he said). I once got eleven in front of the school as a punishment for spitting. I don't think this p[particularly harmed me. In Grammar School we were caned by the Headmaster and the punishment was duly recorded in a 'Punishment Book' and witnessed by another master. I got it six times over the years. It hurt like hell but you were always given a choice of the cane or 500 lines. Problem was that when you got back to class you had to show the other the marks on your backside to prove you had been tough enough for the cane. If you took lines you would be called 'soft' by your classmates of even slapped by them.

Since the banning of corporal punishment school discipline has gone to very bad levels and the young no longer have any respect for their elders.

I accept that physical punishment is a nit gross but it didn't harm me or any of my friends long term and it certainly taught us discipline.

1) YES I HAVE BEEN PADDLED. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS.
2) LAST GRADE- 6-TH.
3) SEVERAL , MAYBE 5, IN ELEMENTARY. 4) PEDDELING WAS VERY MILD, NOT PAINFUL AT ALL.
5) HELPFUL. TOUGHT ME A LESSON TO BE OBEDIENT TO THE TEACHER. AFTER TEACHER PEDDELING, PARENTS BEAT THE CRAP OF ME.
6) IN ILLINOIS. GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL IN 1970.

PEDDELING WAS PART OF DISCIPLINE. IT TOUGHT YOU RESPECT FOR OTHERS, WEATHER SOMEONE OLDER THAN YOU OR YOUNGER THAN YOU. THEY SHOULD TRY THIS TODAY, MAYBE OUR CHILDREN WOULD RESPECT THEIR PARENTS AND TEACHERS AND OTHER HUMANS. MAYBE THERE WOULD BE LESS SHOOTINGS IN OUR SOCIETY.
