We have gotten how we are primarily because of speech.
We pass knowledge from one generation to the next so they don't have to rediscover it; just learn it.
If we never had speech, we would be out hunting cows in a war gang with a spear or bow and arrow.

Speech is the most important function for the advancement of the human race.

That's two questions. The first, say, if noboby was able to make any sound: well, we just would have used sign language. Signing by people who are deaf from birth is every bit as rich, varied, colloquailised and expressive as vocal speech. For people who acquire it as a child, it is their first language as much as english or spanish or mandarin is for anyone else. If humans still had the capacity for intelligent communication, that is, the part or parts of the brain that decipher linguistic communication, then the details of human history would have changed but the basic "progress" of humans probably wouldn't have been affected.

If instead we never developed this capacity in our brains for any sort of linguistic communication, then we never would have stopped living as small hunter-gatherer bands of hominids. We may not have been even very good hunters either. The development of communication between humans is referred to by some as "the great leap forward", because it is the single most important skill developed by humans.

Vocal speech was very handy in the development of man as a civil creature (notice I didn't say civilized), but it wasnt necessary. It's thought that the brain development that came about that allowed humans to communicate was very highly linked to the voice simply because the voice was there, and it was a very efficient way to communicate. But if we could not vocalize, the brain development would simply have gone in a different direction. Sign language could have been used or, if you go in for that sort of thing, telepathy could have developed. The important thing is that we developed the ability to communicate our thoughts, and the fact that it developed into speech was secondary.

Ther would be much less arguements and Wars. Also there wouldn't have been mass followings of one leader (such as Hitler in WWII). The only way that hitler gained so much power was by his speeches was through his speeches. However there would obviously be the downsides as it would not be possible to communicate as easily.

Then we'd still be primitive hunter-gatherers lacking the ability to express complex thoughts neceessary for civilization.
