It honestly is a matter of opinion as to whether Zone 6 is better than an out of London area. When living in Zone 6, you may be in the London suburbs but you can still get some of the benefits of living in a city. Out of London areas will give the benefits of suburban towns. It depends on what lifestyle you want. Commuting time is not necessarily different if you choose out of London or Zone 6 if you choose your area carefully. What may be an issue is commuting cost. Living in Zone 6 on the tube network will cost you tube prices; living in an out of London area will cost National Rail prices plus cost of tube.

Reading isn't a bad place to live if you are comparing prices with London.

It also has one of the best pubs in the country, The Hobgoblin, and one of the biggest Beer Festivals (early May bank holiday each year)
