How Theatre Began

Storytelling. Early man huddling around the fire, relating stories of events of the day or the past, or trying to explain natural phenomenon like the moon or the sun.

It is my belief that this would evolve as man evolved, into religion. In the West, the Greeks were the first to give importance to theater, creating amphitheaters for the event, followed by the Romans who built amphitheaters in every town they conquered.

During the Dark Ages, the Church used theater to tell Bible stories and relay morality plays, since the Bible was written in Latin and most of the public couldn't read Latin.

I hope that gives you a start to do the research. You'll need to cite sources for your contentions.

Theater began in tribes sitting around campfires and relating the past, and, the hope-full future, via mostly improvisational acting out of situations. This original form can still be seen amongst tribes high in the Owen Stanley mountains of Papua New Guinea.

While you are doing your research -- avoid thinking of Rome and the Greeks until you look at the history in China and Japan.

If someone asked me, "where did theater begin?", I would reply,"In the mind."
