there really isn't a best, as i'm sure you know, it's all a matter of preference. torchic will supposedly have a hard time in the first gym, but there are water and grass types that you will have gotten, or at least had the chance to get, that will have no problems in these situations
I, personally, like torchic. while fire types aren't really rare, a good fire type is hard to come by, as is a nice fighting type.
who ever used a hitmontop? a machoke? a primape? nobody.
blaziken is not only a great fire type, but is quite a good fighting type

I think Treeco is cool but its defiantly Torchic.
