I have the same problem and like you I prefer to stay home and read a book.
Today I'm being dragged out to an Indian restaurant when I really don't want to go,if I refuse they'll say I'm being moody and that I need to get out more.
I still haven't fully decided whether I'm going or not.

JUST SAY NO!

Simply say no..... You do not owe any explanations to anyone.
Some people like some peace and tranquility in their life. and take me time to relax, unwind, heal and just chill. Others can't stand to be alone, they have to be constantly going or doing... You obviously are very comfortable with you. That is so good and so major in life... Relax, don't worry... they will get the message eventually.. keep reading , it is a wonderful pastime and can take you so many places you never would have dreamed of... You are on the right track... Say no thanks...that is it....They might drop you from their pack.. but I doubt it.... every group needs a strong person that doesn't follow the herd and can think for herself.

:)
I had the same problem when i was young, I too prefered to stay home and read most times then going out.

Tell them you don't like noise, crowds. Tell them you prefer to stay home and read.

Do however try once in awhile to go out with them.. And when you don't go with them, make sure to ask them about the time they had so when they talk you don't feel left out and don't know what they are talking about.

If your friends are good friends they will understand, and will eventually learn which things to invite you to, and which ones not to.

best of luck and keep reading

if your friends think you're moody because you prefer reading to socialising with bland people, **** em. book are great. and being moody is great too. if i can't be bothered to go out, i tell people exactly why i don't want to, and they respect me for my honesty (probably)

Just tell them straight up that you don't want to go out. That's all there is to it. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone. You have the right to spend time alone and without them when you want to.

You say: "Guys, I need some 'downtime' to myself. Hope you have a good time. Maybe I'll go next time." Don't apologize or let them talk you into it if you don't want to go. Godloveya.
