"Food for thought" is confusing. Food is something that our body needs without it our mind can't fully work as it is. If something is describe as providing food for thought, it's worth seriously thinking about or considering.

One should not just give an answer immediately, but should rather meditate on the idea. Just as a person should slowly chew their food when eating, a person should carefully "digest" or think about the idea that is being presented.

Knowledge is the food of our thoughts.
