I had the same problem when I first got my ipod back in August. I called technical support and they help me uninstall and reinstall and I did not lose any of the song that I already had stored. Try giving them a call. If you don't have the number, it is available on-line.

If you dont have back up of the music before you installed your itune then you loose everything.

If the prior installation fails, uninstall and download again.

if you 'eject disc' and remove the ipod, you wont lose anything, its only when you connect it back up and itunes asks you: "there is another itunes associated with this ipod" if you press the wrong one then, it will wipe your ipod... just reinstall itunes

download itunes again, go to install, and hit repair. this should fix it. if not, uninstall itunes, and reinstall fully. your music should be in the default music folder you had it in previously, so just add it from there.
