In the Uk, they don't have to keep paying you! After you have been there 26 weeks you are entitled to 26 weeks Satutory Maternity Pay (SMP). Don't get too excited about this tho, its 90% of your salary for 6 weeks, then it drops to approx £120 a week. Less tax etc... (about £450 a month)
If you have been with your company a while (2 years?) you are then entitled to take Additional Maternity Leave (AML) for another 26 weeks. This does not have to be at all!
Some companies are better than others, and this indicates the minimum they HAVE to give you. Some companies operate schemes where they continue to pay your salary, but if you hand your notice in within x amount of time, they claim some or all of it back. Hopefully your company will be better than mine are - I'm on SMP.

If your expected week of childbirth is on or after April 1st 2007, the law will have changed and you are entitled to one year no matter how long your service with a company has been. Before that date, the old law entitles everyone to 26 weeks, but only those with 26 weeks continuous service to the full 52 weeks. Statutory pay has also been lengthened from 26 to 39 weeks. You can ask your company for a copy of their policy because some include more benefits than others. Good luck!!

I think that you will find that paid maternity leave is a statutory payment. Therefore, it doesn't matter if you have worked for the company for five minutes, if you are pregnant then you are entitled to SMP. Statutory Sick Pay works the same way.
Check out the Government website.
The alternative would be that you would use up holiday pay and that would depend on your contract of employment and when the holiday pay year starts and finishes.
Pop 'Statutory Maternity Pay' into your search engine and you will come up with the HM Customs and Revenue website. The answers are on there.

You can take maternity leave from your eighth month of pregnancy no matter how long you have worked for a company (unless you have a complicated pregnancy which requires you to take your leave earlier). How much you will get paid during your leave, and whether you will be able to return to your job at the end of your leave, depends on the country in which you live.

Each company has their own policy. To my knowledge there is no law that states a person has to be paid at some time during employment for maternity leave.

It depends on the company. My job didn't even offer paid maternity leave.
Hey if any pregnant women watched Oprah this week, you should move to Norway and work. One year of PAID maternity leave, free healthcare until baby's 7 and extra money just for a nanny???? He// yeah!!!!

Employers are not required to pay you for maternity leave. It is up to your employer as to if you get paid while you are out. If you have sick leave, you can take it as sick leave. You can get approved for FMLA; however, this does not necessarily entitle you to be paid while you are on maternity leave. It only protects your job, so your employer cannot replace you while you are on leave.

Every company has their own policies- THe best bet woul be to check with your superior or HR person. And there is Federal Law but it has restrictions to the F.M.L.A. (Family Medical Leave Act) check it out online.
