If the problem can be traced to the cruise control amplifier don't automatically chuck it out. Pull it apart and re-solder all the electronic joints you can find using a 25Watt earthed soldering iron. If you can't do it yourself get some electronic hobbyist to do it. This has saved a few c.c.amplifiers from '80s S class MBs.

The Cruise control "Amplifier" is the most common problem of the system. The control servo linked to the throttle linkage is the next usually failed part. Check "power" @ servo if none, check power inputs to Amplifier,if ok then problem is inside amp. which requires replacement. Good luck!
