I found a small leak from the drum. A rust spot the size of a quarter. Would it work to sand and seal with a liquid weld product?

For front loading models
It could be you are not using low sud detergent
or the rubber flaps connecting the drum to the door opening
is cut by mostly opened zippers
As for top loading models
There could be coins obstructing the discharge plunger from closing properly
Cracks or tear at the discharge hose on both models
You have to open the top cover in the front loading model or
the back cover of the top loading model
and observe and detect where the leak is while it is running
Hope you can find the leak and solve it yourself
Oh! to add something,
If it's a front loading model, make sure the discharge hose is hung at the same height as the machine from behind

I know this will sound stupid...but I had the same problem and had a repairman come in. He saw that I was using a name brand detergent (Tide) and right away said that I was using too much...I cut back on the amount and the leaking problem stopped. It was leaking from the bottom because the excess suds was going between the drum and the outside wall of the washer

You can patch it. But it's only a temporary fix. It's rusting from the inside out and I am sure other places are ready to let loose. It must be an older washer. Most have used a plastic tub for the last 8 years. Must be a GE or Amana. I hate to hear answers (REPLACE IT) but in this case that's what you need to do.

In addition to the other answers...

If you've noticed a small amount of water, that is coming from the door (and you have a frontloader - obviously), check your dispenser drawer. This can become gunged up, causing a small amount of water to leak. You can see evidence of this by looking for water marks leading from the dispenser drawer to the door of your machine.

Also, if you have cleaned your filter lately, make sure you've tightened it up (without crossthreading) properly.

check your hoses sometimes the drain hose is not on all the way also check other hoses for cracks and make sure they are on properly lastly check and see if you can see any residue from the drum it might be a seal and you might have to replace washer
