an Ionic Bond is formed since the extra electron of the sodium atom is given to the chlorine atom so,both the atoms will have a full outer shells.

since sodium has 1 electron in its outer shell +chlorine has 7 in its outer shell.than the sodium gives the electron to chlorine.making both chlorine + sodium ''happy'' as they both have a full outer shell of electrons now. hence they form sodium chloride NACl
