Hi, I've lived in a few rented houses before getting one of my own. All these said "no pets" but when I asked them about my hamster the lettings agency said it's really just for large pets like cats, dogs, house rabbits - that sort of thing - because they can be destructive and messy. They said they were fine with small caged animals like hamsters and mice. So it is definitely worth you checking. Or just do what a lot of people I know do and take it to your new house anyway. Landlords are legally obliged to give you a sensible amount of notice before doing a check on you once you're in there so you will easily be able to hide your hammy in a cupboard for a couple of hours when you know the landlord is visiting. Good Luck, hope you manage to keep you hamster with you! :-)

Maybe your landlord will be flexible if you ask permission? I've asked my landlord (Newcastle City Council!) if I can keep two chickens as pets in my garden, which is against the tenancy agreement, but they said I can so long as no-one complains. Personally, I can't see how a hamster is a serious breech of the terms of your tenancy, but technically it could be enough to get you evicted. Have you tried asking the landlord? Lets face it, hamsters don't live long do they so she won't be around forever will she? No I'm not being unkind, I've kept loads of pet rodents so I understand your attachment. I wouldn't have one now though because there's a mobile phone mast nearby and within weeks of it being erected all my small pets (two mice, two gerbils, two rats) developed cancers and died or had to be put to sleep. It's probably a coincidence but who can say for sure? They were all perfectly fine before and I'd kept small pets for 20 years without any problems. Anyway, good luck.

Are you sure you can't have a hamster?? I have two guinea pigs and a rabbit and I rent. They allow cats for an additional cost and allowed dogs for a while but I think people didn't clean up after them and they no longer allow them. Since your hamster is not going to ruin any part of the house or be noisy maybe they will reconsider.

Maybe try talking to the person your renting from & explain it's just a hamster & that you are very attatched. She might understand, also tell her she can check in to see how things are going & to assure that the hamster is not damaging the home in any way.

smuggling is the only answer, i have a dog and i got her when i lived in a strictly no pets house, i managed to hide her away from the estate agents everytime they came round and the house was on the market so they were round alot, if i can do it with a medium sized dog who barks at her own shadow, u can do it with a hamster, good luck

I think you could take the hamster with you. The no pets rule usually means no cats or dogs. Small caged animals should be fine since they cannot damage the house.

I lived in rented accomodation for five years.... with an illegal cat, and several illegal pet rats. It's possible, but be carefull.

You might find that the pet's policy is extended to cat's dogs and other large animals... so your Hammies might be OK anyway, but DON'T ask.... as they will say NO and you'll be screwed.... if you take them anyway, and if you get caught, claim you didn't realise it meant caged animals.... Our cat never caused any problems, and the neighbours never noticed her.

At one stage here (a one cat only flat as per tennancy agreement) I had a lurcher, a Doberman, 3 cats (2 of them illegaly smuggled in strays from Spain and three extra people !! ) Be cool, if the landlord visits, hide them in the loft for an hour or out in the car.

Take Hammies with you and lurve them !!!!

Ask the owner of the propety can take your little friend with you if you pay an extra bond against him escaping and eating the house. Most will allow it if there is a bond. Good luck.

I don't think a hamster is in the list of pets not allowed . Most places don't even have to know about them

you are infact allowed caged animals in a rented property, so just take her with you no-one will know apart from you anyway. your also allowed dogs despite what the lease says but you have to pay an additional fee on top of your rent for insurance incase they damage the property in anyway.
