Its better not to write the wrong code than the not writing at all. It is difficult to get the PIN code from outside ur place as there may be many. Some times the locality where u reside may not come under the postal code of the Post office where it is located. So be careful. Uf u have the corrrect complete address it will reach the destination sooner than later( may be few days delay). If a wrong PIN is given it will be returned back to u as address not found.

Katie gave you your answer first!
Just as a humorous foot note I would add that a couple of days ago I sent off a letter for work with a return address (you know how it comes up on 'word') and the next day the Post Office delivered it back to us! What I am trying to illustrate is that no matter how hard you try to get all the details right for the Postman to get it right, there will still be mishaps!
The other one is that my Mum sent a letter to us from Australia and all she put was our name and a bit of the address with no street name or the county. Our Postman found us!
All I am trying to say is that post codes don't really seem to matter that much if the Post Person isn't concentrating!
