If you look at it sideways it looks like a person's face with a mouth in a big grin...when people send those sideways faces, they mean to express the emotion demonstrated there. The colon are the eyes; the equals sign is the long nose.

;P is a wink with a tongue sticking out

Some programs convert these keystrokes into "smileys". In the absence of that, people often use them to convey an emotion in a simple manner. Because text can be misconstrued (because you cannot hear the sound of the voice or see the facial expression) smileys are beneficial in helping the reader determine the writer's attitude. Smileys may be cute; but they also often prevent misunderstanding.

:D is a big open-mouthed smile
:) is a grin
:P is a smile with the tounge sticking out (my personal favourite as I am a cheeky girl)
