From Rinkworks Book-A-Minute:
Gandalf: Bilbo Baggins, your Ring is evil. In a couple decades, we'll try to destroy it. In the meantime, leave it for Frodo to play with.
Bilbo Baggins: It's not evil. It's mine. My precious. Mine! MINE, I TELL YOU!! MOOHOOHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
(Frodo takes it to RIVENDELL. Some FRIENDS come with him. They are attacked by black riders a LOT, and it is SCARY.)
Elrond: Frodo Baggins, if Sauron ever gets this Ring, the world will be destroyed, and evil will reign forever. We must act quickly. Take the Ring to where he lives.
(They do some travelling. Some more FRIENDS come with him. Gandalf DIES in the mines of Moria, but will later be RESURRECTED in GLORIFIED form having triumphed over EVIL, an obvious literary ALLUSION to that movie where the guy comes back as a DOG.)
Boromir: Frodo Baggins, give me the Ring.
Frodo: No.
Boromir: What have I done? (dies)
(Gandalf frees THEODEN and overthrows SARUMAN. A bunch of IRRELEVANT stuff happens. Then the PLOT starts up again.)
Aragorn: We must travel the Paths of the Dead.
Eowyn: You'll die. (They don't.)
Gandalf: The Hordes of Mordor will destroy Minis Tirith. (They don't.)
Gandalf: We must attack Mordor. We'll all be killed. (They aren't.)
Gollum: Mmmm, yummy finger! (dies)
Frodo: The Ring has been destroyed, but now we will die in Mordor.
Sam: Buck up, Master Frodo.
(A bunch of feathered DEUS EX MACHINAS come out of NOWHERE and save EVERYBODY.)

Watch the movie it explains everything. If you don't get the movie, don't bother with the book. Try reading something with a lot of pictures instead.
Bad dude sends his minions out to retrieve the most evil object in the world. That object is a ring. A hobbit has the ring. Onl;y Gandolph and Aragorn know what the ring is and they are trying to protect it. Finally they realize that they cannot protect the hobbits anymore. The hobbits have a mission to destroy the ring. The only way to destroy the ring is to go to the bad guys lair and throw it in a volcano. Meanwhile the bad guy is building armies of Goblins to dominate the world. The hobbits meet with the dwarves, elves and humans in the elven kingdom. They elect a group to go and destroy the ring. Gandalph dies fighting a demon. The group eventually gets split up and the 2 hobbits go on with the mission alone, while the rest of the group goes to fight the war. Meanwhile the ring's magical powers are taking over the brain and body of its keeper, the hobbit. The hobbits run into Shmeagol, he was once like a hobbbit but the ring ruined him. Shmeagol turns out to be the only thing that knows how to get them into the lair of the bad guy, so they have to follow him. In the end after several attempts to steal the ring, by shmeagol, they destroy the ring and win the war. By destroying the ring they destroy the bad guy.
the end

First of all, you should read the books, and also maybe read the Hobbit for a little background info. If you want some very in depth history of Middle Earth, then read the Simarilian. The Simarilian tells a bunch of stuff that happened long before the Lord of the Rings takes place, and helps understand some stuff that they refer to in the Lord of the Rings

The Ring is like a Drug,.. therefore noone should have it. Hobbits and some other creatures are not as strongly effected by the RIngs hold.
Plain and Simple,.. RING BAD,.. Ring need destroyed! Bad Ring,.. Bad Ring,.. but it's so Shiney your supposed to want one XD
BAD RING It's all the Rings fault.
I haven't seen the first movie since it came out. The Hobbits before that were not so kid friendly, they were angry drunks, always curseing and complaining they didn't want to budge. Just think of an Old Man with his house and things he would say, not exactly this in the books but " Get off my Lawn", " Someone should beat some -beep- sense into you with all that playing and jumping around", "If I had your body, I'd show them. Instead of have this painful crinkled up thing,.. BAH"
My mom's favorite line from the books was the repeatitive phrase she remembered the Hobbits useing " Piss & Moan"

There is a ring of power that needs to be destroed. If not some cruel spirit Sauron will govern the world.
There creatures - hobbits. They are almost like us but smaller. They go to some rock to destroy the .
Also there are other creatures. Positive: elfs, gnomes and some humans (Aragorn).Negative: ghosts, orks and Gorlum. The first help hobbits, the second prevent them from destroying the Ring.
The main positive characters: Frodo (hobbit), Gandalf (magician), Gimly (gnome), Legolas (elf), Aragorn (human). The story is about their travelling to the rock.

It's a magnificent mythical history with all of the noble elements of a quest, good and evil characters, an occasional love story and engaging characters. It's an incredibly rich and satisfying read that still holds me enthralled even after well over 150 readings of the entire work over the last thirty years. It's said that there are two types of people in the world - those who've read LOTR and those who are going to. Mind you, it can take a little bit of getting "into". I hammered my daughter with the book for over five years before she finally got past the first forty pages and succumbed to its magic. Please make the effort, it's worth it.

It's about Frito (no Lay) trying to find a ring bc he's got no life. Good/Evil Christianity and junk characters. This isn't real literature. Don't worry about it, if you didn't understand it that means you have a life and better things to think about.
