Both, Animals use their instincts in most of their day to day routines, but they also make decisions based on what they see and hear. Elk and Caribou migrate, that would be instinctive. But it would be the ability to use reason and make decisions that would affect things such as when they see something they are not familiar with or cannot readily identify. In that situation some will immediately run, some will come closer trying to get a better look to identify, and some will stay put until they are sure. The different reactions by the same animals in the same herds would lend to different thought processes in the different animals

Ever see a chimpanzee use a stick to get ants out of a hill? This was a logical thought process. Or use a big rock to smash a nut open? I'm fairly certain that chimps have murdered each other with rocks. Maybe these methods of using tools were initially learned by watching primitive man. So let me try again. What about dogs who warn their masters of danger. Or pull them by the pant leg to the scene of an accident. So yep, some animals have a minimal amount of common sense. I'm not sure I do though. How logical is it to be sitting here at 3 am answering questions when I have no idea what I'm talking about. lol seeya.

There are non-human organisms but you should also have the sense that there are organisms. Yes there is a common-sense thought process but they can't decide on there own. Thats why sometimes when train a dog to do something it does accordingly. The fact is that they can't reason on their own though common-sense is there.
