Its European money, and ironically its a 2 Euro coin, i went to Malia, Crete not so long ago, and when i came back to the UK i had dozens of them and unknowingly spent them in shops, no one spotted them and it took me a while to realise that they weren't £2 coins. Also the 1 Euro coin looks the same but just a bit smaller.

Sounds like the euro to me. As we have several countries that are in the EU there are some differences in each coin from different countries, but it does say euro on it somewhere. Hope this helps you.

Well there's a Mexican coin which is almost like the 2 Pound coin, and its less than half the price..... and though it's identifiable when you see it closely its about the same!
but it has the "aztec sun" on it.

euro's look similar to our pounds
i don't know of any coins from egypt, bahrain or UAE that look similar to our coins, so at least that narrows it down for you
