That depends on the size of the asteroid. Since micro meteorites fall all the time, you get showered by minute particles of cosmic dust falling from above. Those micro meteorites are burnt up and slowed down by the atmosphere. Larger rock can impact the ground, some moving faster than the speed of sound. Given that this is about the speed of a bullet, imaging what would happen if you got hit by a rock much heavier than a bullet but travelling at that speed.
Large meteors, like a few million tons, can devastate a city; very large ones, like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, can kill most life on the whole planet.
The chance such event will occur on any given day is extremely low; that chance that it will occur again is 100% over million of years.

I read somewhere on the National geographic web ( or is it discovery channel? ) that we are 4 times more likely to be hit by an asteroid/meteorite (can't really remember) than by lightning.
There definitely will be the possibility that we will be hit by near earth objects, it's only a matter of time. But for it to fall exectly on your head I guess it's highly unlikely?

Any object falling that far would be travelling at terminal velocity. Even a pea sized piece of asteroid would kill you if it hit your head.

well, if it is large enough even after the corosion due to the friction, then may be you'll not have a head after that. How's that for a damage?
